CHARLESTON — A female inmate is suing state correction facility operators, alleging abuse and assault.
Kadijah Butler filed a complaint in Kanawha Circuit Court against Ian Patterson, the West Virginia Division of Correction and Rehabilitation and John Doe, alleging WDCR failed to take reasonable measures to protect inmates from cruel and unusual punishment, sexual assault and harassment.
According to the complaint, Butler, who was an inmate at Anthony Correctional Center in Greenbrier County, has suffered anxiety, annoyance, pain and suffering, medical expenses and loss of enjoyment of life.
The plaintiff alleges Patterson, a correctional officer, forced her and other female residents to perform sexual acts on him and threatened to report them for compromising or contraband if they refused his advances or if they told anyone about what had occurred.
Butler seeks trial by jury, compensatory and punitive damages, court costs, attorney fees and all other appropriate relief. She is represented by attorneys Timothy J. Manchin and Joseph D. Garcia of Manchin Injury Law Group PLLC in Fairmont.
