Man alleges doors at New Martinsville Walmart closed on arm and trapped him

NEW MARTINSVILLE – A couple from Friendly is suing Walmart and another company after the husband's arm was trapped in the automatic doors at the store.

James L. Gorrell and Lorrie L. Gorrell filed a complaint in Wetzel Circuit Court against Walmart Inc. and Stanley Access Technologies LLC alleging negligence.

The suit states that James L. Gorrell was shopping at the Walmart in New Martinsville on May 5, 2018, and was injured when the automatic sliding doors opened and then closed on the plaintiff's right arm, crushing his right arm and elbow. The suit states the plaintiff's arm was stuck in the doors until a manager came and pried them open.

The plaintiffs allege Walmart was negligent in failing to ensure the doors were properly maintained and Stanley Access Technologies were negligent in failing to properly service and maintain the doors.

The plaintiffs are seeking damages of less than $75,000, attorney fees and court costs. The plaintiffs are represented by Frank X. Duff of Schrader, Companion, Duff & Law in Wheeling.

The case has been assigned to Judge Jeffrey Cramer.
