West Virginia Governor's Office issued the following announcement on Sept. 20.
Gov. Jim Justice made a national television news appearance today on the Fox News show, Fox & Friends, to discuss West Virginia recently recording its best unemployment rate in 11 years.
The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in West Virginia dropped to 4.6 percent in the month of August. This figure surpassed the previous state record for this decade and stands as the best seasonally adjusted unemployment rate seen in West Virginia since October 2008.
During the interview, Gov. Justice highlighted the diversity of the job growth being seen in West Virginia.
“It’s been an all-in approach,” Gov. Justice said. “We’ve surely got our miners back to work, we’ve got people working in the gas industry, tourism is exploding in West Virginia, manufacturing is really on the move in West Virginia, there’s high-tech – there’s so many things – from education, there’s lots of stuff.”
West Virginia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate has been on a steady decline every month this calendar year.
“West Virginia is on the move,” Gov. Justice said. “West Virginia has become the diamond in the rough that everybody’s missing. I tell everybody, if you want a terrific job and you want to live in paradise, you need to be in West Virginia.”
Seasonal adjustment is a statistical technique that attempts to remove the influences of predictable seasonal patterns to reveal how employment and unemployment change from month to month, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. It is considered the standard unemployment measurement.
