CHARLESTON – State Supreme Court Justice Evan Jenkins announced the start of a new civic and student education video series.

The series, called “And Justice for All,” was introduced June 1 during an online press conference.

“In our system of government, the public is counting on the courts to protect their rights and liberties,” said Jenkins, who narrates most of the first videos. “Through this video series, we hope to share not only why our judicial system is so important in a civil society, but also how it works.”

The videos, which are about two minutes each, will premiere each Monday on the court’s YouTube channel, and links will be provided on the court’s webpage, Facebook page and Twitter page. The first two videos, an introduction to the series and a history of the Supreme Court Chamber, were released during the announcement.

“The videos will cover a wide range of topics such as highlighting the history of our beautiful Supreme Court chamber in Charleston, describing how cases are handled from Magistrate Court to the Supreme Court, and profiling the important work the almost 1,500 state judicial employees do in county courthouses throughout West Virginia,” Jenkins said. “Whether these videos are used by social studies teachers to help educate our students or watched by a West Virginian just wanting to learn more about the judicial system, we hope the videos will help promote more awareness and understanding of the importance of an independent judiciary that is transparent, accountable and accessible.”

Jenkins noted that the videos were produced in-house by Supreme Court Multimedia Specialist Alex Wilson and that no outside contacted service using taxpayer money was used.

To suggest a video idea, contact Supreme Court Public Information Officer Jennifer Bundy at Jennifer.bundy@courtswv.gov or (304) 340-2305 or Deputy Public Information Officer April Harless at april.harless@courtswv.gov or (304) 340-2306.

Jenkins said he hopes others in the court system will participate in the video series.

“The other justices are very excited about this initiative,” he said. “We already have a few already in the can, as they say. And I’ve done (provided voiceover) all of them so far, but we hope it will be a group effort.”
