WEST VIRGINIA ATTORNEY GENERAL: Attorney General Morrisey Issues Statement for Juneteenth

West Virginia Attorney General issued the following announcement on June 19.

West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey issued a statement in honor of Juneteenth.

“June 19, 1865, is a day every American should know, for that is the date on which slaves in Texas heard the good news: they were free at last. On that first Juneteenth, they learned the Civil War had ended and slavery in this nation was gone for good. One could even say it is the day the Declaration of Independence’s assertion that ‘all men are created equal’ began its long, often slow and painful march to being recognized in law as well as word.

“As recent events have shown, the promise of that day still has a way to go to see its fulfillment. As people of all races work hand-in-hand to achieve a better America, we will undoubtedly face some difficulties. That is inevitable and should not distress any American. Regardless, no difficulty should deter us in our never-ending effort, as our Constitution says, to achieve ‘a more perfect Union, establish justice’ and ‘ensure domestic tranquility.’”
