Summersville woman says she slipped on liquid at Food Lion grocery store

SUMMERSVILLE – A Summersville woman says she fell because of a liquid substance on the floor of her local Food Lion grocery store.

Shirl A. Lanham filed her complaint in Nicholas Circuit Court against Food Lion LLC.

According to her complaint, Lanham was shopping at the Food Lion in Summersville on July 20, 2018, when she slipped on the unknown liquid substance and injured herself. She says she sustained a severe injury to her right shoulder and right hip.

She says there were no warnings of the liquid on the floor, and she says Food Lion should have known about the substance on the floor. She also says Food Lion has video of the incident to confirm her allegations.

Lanham says she has to have medical treatment for her injuries and might require additional treatment. She says she has incurred significant medical expenses and could incur more.

She accuses the company of negligence,

Lanham seeks damages for her bodily injuries, her pain and suffering, mental anguish, emotional distress, anxiety, annoyance, inconvenience, aggravation, diminution in her ability to enjoy life and limitations on her ability to perform daily activities. She also seeks damages for medical expenses as well as punitive damages, pre- and post-judgment interest, court costs, attorney fees and other expenses.

She is being represented by Shawn R. Romano and Miles B. Berger of Romano & Associates in Charleston. The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge Stephen Callaghan.
