West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals issued the following announcement on Aug. 13.
The Kanawha County Juvenile Drug Court, partnering with the Kanawha County Commission, has been awarded a $20,000 Emergency Aid grant from The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation. “The success of the participants in our treatment court depends largely on the commitment of their parents and/or guardians. Many of them, especially during the current pandemic, face challenging life circumstances,” said Thirteenth Judicial Circuit (Kanawha County) Judge Joanna Tabit, who supervises the Kanawha County Juvenile Drug Court. “Our treatment team is very appreciative of this grant from TGVF.
With these funds, we’ll be able to assist with emergent needs such as transportation, rent, utilities, groceries, clothing, and medication, among other things, and help give our participants and their families the tools to succeed in our program and with the overall recovery process.” Judge Tabit said.
West Virginia Juvenile Drug Courts are a cooperative effort of the juvenile justice, social service, law enforcement, and education systems in the state. The program seeks to divert non-violent juvenile offenders exhibiting alcohol or substance abuse behavior from the traditional juvenile court process to an intensive, individualized treatment process. The goal is to reduce future court involvement for these youth.
