CHARLESTON – The U.S. Department of Justice has asked both U.S. Attorneys from West Virginia for their resignations.

Bill Powell, the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of West Virginia, announced February 10 he would resign at the end of the month. Mike Stuart, his counterpart in the Southern District, has not made an announcement yet.

Powell became the U.S. Attorney shortly after Donald Trump became president in 2017. Stuart stepped into his job in January 2018.

Such requests for resignations are common with new administrations.

“It has been my great professional honor to work with the dedicated men and women in the Northern District of West Virginia,” Powell said in announcing his resignation effective February 28. “It was that dedication along with their hard work that the districts’ successes were possible. I believe this district serves as an example of consistency, fairness and effectiveness.

“I always did my best to serve justice and to do so in an impartial manner. I will miss serving in this position more than words can express, and I wish great success to whoever is appointed as the new U.S. Attorney.”
