Law

West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals issued the following announcement on Apr. 28.

Supreme Court Justices will participate in a virtual awards ceremony at noon on Monday, May 3, for the West Virginia State Bar Women in the Profession Committee’s Law Day 2021 student contests.

Students and media may watch the virtual event via WebEx at the following link: https://courtswv.webex.com/courtswv/onstage/g.php?MTID=e39fee730704a0c4c3bbf38c 356c51392. Password: WVLawDay. President Dwight D. Eisenhower founded Law Day in 1958 to celebrate the role of law in America and to cultivate a deeper understanding of the legal profession. Law Day events are held on or near May 1.

The West Virginia State Bar Women in the Profession Committee was formed in 2020. In January the committee invited students across West Virginia to participate in contests involving essay-writing, poetry, songwriting and performance, poster creation, and social media marketing. Entries had to be sponsored by a teacher and approved by parents. Students had the option of using either the 2020 Law Day theme, which was “Your Vote, Your Voice, Our Democracy: The 19th Amendment at 100,” or the 2021 theme, which is “Advancing the Rule of Law Now.” About 25 prizes will be given for winners in three school levels (K-5, 6-8, 9-12) for each medium, and overall prizes will be awarded for “Best in Show” for each of the three school levels.

Following the award presentation, Supreme Court Justices will give a virtual tour of the Supreme Court Chamber in the East Wing of the West Virginia Capitol in Charleston. “The Supreme Court is committed to enhancing our students’ knowledge of law and the West Virginia court system,” said Chief Justice Evan Jenkins. “We applaud the Women in the Profession Committee’s civics education efforts and congratulate all those who participated in this year’s competition for their outstanding work.”

Justice Beth Walker said, “I hope that events like Law Day encourage more students, especially girls, to see themselves as lawyers or judges in the future. It’s a great way to introduce students to our profession.”
