CHARLESTON — A woman is suing Charleston Area Medical Center for an infection she developed after she had knee surgery.

Katherine O'Bryan saw Dr. James Cox at CAMC Teays Valley on Jan. 25, 2019, when he performed her left knee reconstructive surgery and she later developed wound dehiscence and infection, according to a complaint filed in Kanawha Circuit Court.

O'Bryan claims the defendant failed to timely and properly provide the necessary medical and surgical treatment to her, which caused her to develop the wound dehiscence and infection in her knee after her reconstructive surgery.

The defendant failed to adequately address and treat the source of the wound dehiscence and infection, according to the suit.

O'Bryan claims the defendant's actions and omissions were in reckless disregard for her health and safety.

O'Bryan is seeking compensatory and punitive damages with pre- and post-judgment interest. She is represented by Robert P. Welsh of The Masters Law Firm in Charleston.

The case is assigned to Circuit Judge Tera Salango.
