Court

West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals issued the following announcement on June 14.

A Supreme Court justice, two circuit judges, and a former family law master have been named West Virginia Bar Foundation Fellows.

The foundation will honor its 2020 Fellows Class and 2021 Fellows Class at a dinner on Thursday, June 24, in Charleston. The 2020 Fellows Dinner was cancelled because of COVID-19.

Justice Tim Armstead and Twenty-Third Judicial Circuit (Berkeley, Jefferson and Morgan Counties) Judge Michael D. Lorensen are members of the 2021 Bar Foundation Fellows Class. “I very much appreciate this acknowledgement from the Bar Foundation, and I am honored to be in the company of so many outstanding West Virginians who have contributed so much to our state’s judicial system,” said Justice Armstead. Tenth Judicial Circuit (Raleigh County) Judge H.L. Kirkpatrick, III, and former family law master Gloria Stephens of Welch are members of the 2020 Bar Foundation Fellows Class.

The Bar Foundation names fellows “whose professional, public and private careers have demonstrated outstanding dedication to the welfare of their communities and honorable service to the legal profession with the individuals selected reflecting the diverse nature of the legal profession in West Virginia,” according to its website, https://www.wvbarfound.org/. About 400 people have been named fellows.

There are more than 6,000 judges and lawyers in West Virginia. A list of past fellows is available at: https://www.wvbarfound.org/fellows/.

The West Virginia Bar Foundation makes grants to organizations that provide legal services to low income citizens and that improve the administration of justice, including the Public Service Scholarship at West Virginia University College of Law. More than $510,000 has been distributed and committed since the first grant in 2004, most in just the past 12 years.
