West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals issued the following announcement on July 12.

On Monday, Supreme Court Chief Justice Evan Jenkins released a statement on the resignation of Magistrate Michael “Mike” J. Woelfel, whose resignation was effective July 12, 2021.

He accepted a position as the Cabell Circuit Clerk. “Magistrate Woelfel’s exemplary service to Cabell County citizens for more than 18 years will serve him well in his next job as Circuit Clerk,” Chief Justice Jenkins said. “Over the years, he has proven himself to be a leader among his peers, serving as Cabell County Chief Magistrate since 2018 and, most recently, as the Magistrate Association’s President. He is a great friend, and I wish him all the best in his new position.”

Magistrate Woelfel was appointed in 2003. According to an article by The Herald-Dispatch, he is the youngest person to serve in that position in West Virginia’s history. He is a graduate of St. Joseph Central Catholic High School and has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Marshall University.

For most of his career as a magistrate, he has served on the Magistrate Education Committee.
