CHARLESTON — House of Delegates attorney Dan Greear was presented with an award by the National Conference of State Legislatures' Leadership Staff Professional Association.

Greear, who is Chief Counsel to House Speaker Roger Hanshaw, received the 2021 Legislative Staff Achievement Award.

“It’s an honor not only to be recognized by legislative staff members throughout the country, but also to know my colleagues here in West Virginia nominated me for such a prestigious award," Greear told The West Virginia Record. "I’m proud to be a part of this leadership team working together to make our state the best place to live, work, and raise a family”

The Speaker praised Greear.

“Dan Greear is the very model of a legislative staff professional,” Hanshaw (R-Clay) said. “In addition to being an indispensable legal resource for the West Virginia House of Delegates, he is a trusted and reliable counselor to the entire leadership staff of the House."

Greear has been involved with the House of Delegates for many years, serving as chief of staff for the House of Delegates in 2014. He returned to the House of Delegates as chief of counsel in 2018 after stepping away to serve as an interim Kanawha circuit judge.

"LSPA selects Dan Greear to receive the Legislative Staff Achievement Award for his commitment to the West Virginia Legislature, House of Delegates and Office of the Speaker," the LSPA said in the award recipient program. "Steady and constant, Greear is a born consensus builder. His extensive with the West Virginia Legislature ensures that Greear can navigate state agencies and that no time is wasted on missteps throughout the process."

The LSPA noted that Greear knew how to explain the law and legislative process to members so that they could clearly and confidently advocate for or against certain bills each session.

"Greear is always generous with his advice and experience and has contributed to just about every major piece of legislation considered by the House since he arrived," the LSPA said. "He supports the staff in a variety of ways and has made the House a better place to work. He encourages all staff to continually learn, to join NCSL and to be the best legislative staffers they can be."

Greear is a lifelong Kanawha County resident. He graduated from South Charleston High School, received his bachelor’s degree from Liberty University and received his law degree from West Virginia University College of Law.

He served one term as a Republican member of the House of Delegates representing Kanawha County in 1995-96, and he was the chief counsel for the West Virginia Attorney General’s office from 2013-2014. He became the House of Delegates' Chief of Staff in early 2015. Before joining the AG's office, Greear was managing member of KKB LLC, focusing on general civil litigation.
