PRINCETON — A couple is suing Princeton Community Hospital alleging negligence that injuries to a newborn and the mother.
Princeton Community Hospital Association was also named as a defendant in the suit.
Amanda Smith and Evan Smith had a child, Anna Smith, on Sept. 1, 2019, at the hospital, according to a complaint filed in Mercer Circuit Court.
The newborn, Anna Smith, then developed a severe condition that required her to be transported to Charleston Area Medical Center on Sept. 14, 2019, according to the suit.
The plaintiffs claim that when the med-flight crew arrived to take Anna Smith by air to CAMC, the staff at PCH advised Amanda Smith that she should ride in the helicopter with the child.
The defendants advised Amanda Smith to ride in the helicopter in case the newborn needed her or the condition became worse or she woke up during the flight to the hospital, however, because she had given birth two weeks prior, she developed blood clots in her body and was also hospitalized at CAMC.
Amanda Smith was hospitalized to prevent or treat a pulmonary embolism at CAMC, according to the suit.
The plaintiffs claim PCH also administered the wrong medication to Anna Smith, which temporarily worsened her condition.
The plaintiffs claim as a result of the defendants' negligence, Amanda Suffered severe blood clots that resulted in hospitalization and treatment at CAMC and Evan Smith suffered the loss of consortium and services of his wife.
The plaintiffs are seeking compensatory damages. They are represented by Anthony R. Veneri of Veneri Law Offices in Princeton.
The case is assigned to Circuit Judge William Sadler.
