PRINCETON — A woman is suing several physicians and healthcare businesses alleging they are responsible for the death of her husband.

Dr. Frederick Williams Barker, Surgical Care of the Virginias LLC, Princeton Community Homecare LHC Homecare of West Virginia, Dr. Naeem A. Qazi and Naeem A. Qazi M.D. PLLC were all named as defendants in the suit.

Thomasina Wilson, on behalf of the estate of Harold W. Jones, alleges that Jones suffered from a host of serious and disabling medical conditions and was confined to a wheelchair, according to a complaint filed in Mercer Circuit Court.

Wilson claims despite his need for continuous and comprehensive care, the defendants failed to provide that care to him and on Nov. 2, 2018, he suffered from pressure ulcers and dressings were applied, but no information on how to reduce the pressure from his backside was given.

The next week when PCH returned, the pressure ulcers were worse and a wound culture was ordered, showing bacterial infections. He was then transferred to Bluefield Regional Medical Center and admitted for sepsis secondary to the pressure ulcer infection, according to the suit.

Wilson claims Barker performed a surgical debridement for the ulcer and pathology indicated osteomyelitis, however, Barker did not address that and he was discharged on Nov. 20, 2018.

After returning home, Jones was seen multiple times by the home care staff and nothing they did specifically addressed pressure reduction on Jones' backside, according to the suit. He was also seen by Qazi who failed to appropriately treat and address the pressure wound issue.

By February 2019, Jones needed another debridement procedure and in April 2019, he had blood cultures performed that showed two different bacteria in the wounds, according to the suit.

On June 26, 2019, Jones was transferred to an advanced wound care center in Virginia and he was diagnosed with Stage 4 pressure wounds, according to the suit. He underwent extensive medical treatments, however, he died from septic shock on April 7, 2021.

Wilson claims the defendants were medically negligent in their care of Jones.

Wilson is seeking compensatory damages. She is represented by Brian Headley, Jason Ballard and Jonathan Matthews of Headley Ballard in Pearisburg, Va.

The case is assigned to Circuit Judge Mark Wills.
