CHARLESTON — For attorney Brooks West, giving back to the community is something he cares deeply about, which is why his law firm is giving away backpacks full of school supplies to children on Thursday.

West, the founder of West Law Firm in Charleston, said he plans to make the backpack giveaway an annual event and he even wants to up the number of backpacks they give out in the coming years.

"We want to do this every year, maybe more than once a year," West said. "We already do several animal shelter adoptions throughout the year and we want to do this, too. We love to give back to the community and help in any way we can."

West said the law firm is giving away 350 packages on a first-come, first-serve basis on Thursday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Mary C. Snow Elementary School. If they run out of backpacks, they will end the event sooner.

West said he'd love to be able to give out more backpacks next time if possible.

"We hope to be able to give away more backpacks next time," West said. "This time it's 350. We'd love to do even 1,000 if we could in the future."

West said they're giving away 150 15-inch backpacks for younger children and 200 17- and 19-inch backpacks for older children and teenagers.

"We've packed them full of supplies, too," West said. "There's hand sanitizer, pencils, pens, a pencil sharpener, either colored pencils or crayons, notebooks and folders."

West said he wants to see the kids in the community succeed.

"Our goal is to give back to the community and help ensure our area children have all the tools they need to succeed at school this year," West said.

West said the event will also be hosted by Electric 102.7 and will have a DJ.
