CHARLESTON — A woman is suing Thomas Health System claiming she was injured when she slipped and fell due to a wet floor.
Sarah Fortner was a registered nurse and was employed by Select Medical Corporation, which rents the third floor of St. Francis Hospital in Charleston, according to a complaint filed in Kanawha Circuit Court.
Fortner claims on July 18, 2020, she was working when she entered a patient's room and slipped on wet floor, which had been mopped by the janitorial staff, and she fell to the ground.
Fortner claims there was no signage to indicate that the floor was wet or that mopping had occurred and when she fell to the ground, her right shoulder got lodged between the door and the ground.
"Immediately after the fall...Fortner began to experience pain in her right shoulder," the complaint states. "Dr. (Hatem) Hossino quickly examined Sarah and recommended that she seek further examination."
The plaintiff then went to MedExpress and was diagnosed with an unspecified sprain of the right shoulder joint and an MRI was later ordered and showed an anterior labral tear with displacement.
On Oct. 1, 2020, Fortner had to undergo a right shoulder arthroscopy with debridement of a partial labral tear and glenoid chondroplasty and subacromial decompression, according to the suit.
Fortner claims the defendant was negligent and caused her injuries and her pain.
Fortner is seeking compensatory damages. She is represented by Jonathan R. Mani of Mani Ellis & Layne in Charleston.
The case is assigned to Circuit Judge Carrie Webster
