Lawyers Clearinghouse Honors Nelson Mullins Team with Pro Bono Excellence Award

Lawyers Clearinghouse recognized Boston attorneys John Veysey and Nick Ladin-Sienne with the organization’s 2022 Pro Bono Excellence Award at its Annual Meeting on Sept. 22 for the team’s pro bono housing work. Dara Kovel, CEO of Beacon Communities, was also recognized with the Stephen M. Nolan Leadership Award, and Fabiana Videla of St. Francis House received the Josephine A. McNeil Community Impact Award.

Veysey and Ladin-Sienne, with help from other Nelson Mullins attorneys and staff, represented multiple families facing eviction or other housing difficulties, litigated several related trials and appeals, and provided other representation and assistance with clients’ housing issues.

“Nobody wins when families face housing insecurity. The consequences are severe and can reverberate for years for the families themselves and their community. Unfortunately, the system is difficult to navigate and the odds are often lopsided. The first and most important step is getting those families connected with an attorney. Lawyers Clearinghouse provides an important resource in facilitating that connection, among their other outstanding work. We are grateful LCH gave us these opportunities and we are grateful these clients gave us their trust,” Veysey said.

Lawyers Clearinghouse was founded in 1988 for the purpose of helping people without housing access legal services in Boston. The Clearinghouse achieves this by bridging the gap between lawyers who want to volunteer and nonprofits and homeless people who need their help. It offers free legal clinics throughout the year where lawyers can take pro bono cases for homeless and very low-income individuals.
