CHARLESTON – The mother of a 3-year-old says her son died as a result of negligence by doctors at CAMC and Roane General Hospital.
Sarah Barker, as the personal representative of the estate of Silas Ryan Montgomery Kilbarger, filed the complaint February 15 in Kanawha Circuit Court against Dr. Mouna Chebib, Charleston Area Medical Center, Dr. Brent Watson and Hospital Development Co. doing business as Roane General Hospital. Barker lives in Montgomery County, Ohio.
“This is a tragedy for this family,” attorney L. Dante diTrapano told The West Virginia Record. “I’ll let the complaint speak for itself.”

According to the complaint, Silas was admitted to Roane General on November 20, 2020, and diagnosed with Diabetic Ketoacidosis. Watson gave Silas fluids, and the boy was transferred later that day to CAMC Women and Children’s Hospital.
There, Silas was under Chebib’s care. He was given additional fluids upon arrival, and the next day he had developed cerebral edema secondary to DKA. On November 23, 2020, Silas died as a consequence of cerebral edema secondary to DKA.
The plaintiff says Silas was “overloaded” with an excessive bolus of IV saline fluid.
The plaintiff accuses the defendants of professional and medical negligence for failing to manage Silas’ fluid intake and for deviating from the standards of care.
Barker seeks general damages for Silas’ family’s sorrow, mental anguish, loss of solace, companionship, comfort, guidance, kindly office and advice of decedent, loss of income, services, protection, care and assistance provided by decedent and funeral expenses related to his death. She also seeks punitive damages, pre- and post-judgment interests, court costs, attorney fees and other relief.
She is being represented by diTrapano and David H. Carriger of Calwell Luce diTrapano in Charleston and by Dr. Richard D. Lindsay and Richard D. Lindsay II of Tabor Lindsay & Associates in Charleston. The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge Tera Salango.
