Steptoe & Johnson PLLC is proud to announce that Christine Torbett, a Legal Administrative Assistant in the Columbus office, has been selected to receive the Unsung Heroes of Democracy Award from the American Bar Association (ABA) Task Force for American Democracy. The award honors lawyers, election workers, everyday citizens, and non-profit organizations that stand up for democracy and the rule of law.

For many years, Christine has volunteered as a poll worker to ensure elections in her community are free and fair, demonstrating the strong impact that an everyday citizen can have when it comes to defending democracy. “I decided in 2017 that working as a poll worker was a way I could actively support democracy and, perhaps, make a small difference in ensuring our voting system works,” she explains. “After each election I always feel hopeful and proud that ordinary Americans understand how important voting is. I feel that every voter is glad to be there to vote for who and what they believe in. I believe that most Americans believe that our voting systems are safe.”

Christine has been with Steptoe & Johnson for seven years, serving as a Legal Administrative Assistant to Member and Director of Diversity and Inclusion Michael E. Flowers. “It was my honor and pleasure to nominate Christine for this significant award,” Flowers said. “Christine did not just listen to those who complained about our election process. Christine took action, as a volunteer poll worker for many years, to make sure that our system of elections are currently and remain, in fact, free and fair.”

Christine will receive her award during the Democracy Summit at the 2024 ABA Annual Meeting in Chicago on August 2, 2024.
