Steptoe & Johnson PLLC is pleased to announce that William D. (Bill) Wilmoth has received the 2024 Award of Merit from the West Virginia Bar Association.

The Award of Merit is given to an individual who embodies a continuing commitment to leadership, service, and who contributes to the work and purpose of the West Virginia Bar Association. Additionally, the recipient must demonstrate a lifetime of achievement and exceptional service to the legal community or the public.

Wilmoth joined Steptoe & Johnson’s Wheeling office in 1999 after serving as the United States Attorney for the Northern District of West Virginia. He is experienced in defending complex commercial, energy, security, and health care cases, and he counsels clients in health care compliance audits, health care fraud, and criminal investigations. In addition to his career as an attorney, Bill is heavily involved in his community and has served in many executive roles, including as the Past Chair of the Board of Governors at West Virginia University.

Bill said he has enjoyed practicing law and serving in various capacities throughout the years. “It’s really nice to get this kind of recognition from my peers,” he said. When offering advice to a new generation of attorneys, Bill recommends getting involved. “Find something that serves beyond your job that you’re passionate about and pursue it.”

Wilmoth received his bachelor’s degree and his law degree from West Virginia University and returns to his alma mater frequently as an evidence law instructor. He received the award at the West Virginia Bar Association Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner on Friday, July 12, 2024.
