CHARLESTON – West Virginia delegates to the Democratic National Convention have voted to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris for president.

The West Virginia Democratic Party made the announcement July 23, a day after President Joe Biden announced his decision to discontinue his campaign.

Harris likely will be the first Black woman nominated by a major political party, representing a historic milestone in American politics. The state Democratic Party says her nomination not only will break barriers but also will pave the way for a more inclusive and representative democracy.

Jean Evansmore, an 83-year-old Black woman and a lifelong advocate for civil rights, is one of the delegates.

"As someone who has witnessed the struggles and triumphs of the civil rights movement, seeing Vice President Harris as our nominee fills me with immense pride," Evansmore said. "Her leadership is what our nation needs to restore justice and equality."

West Virginia Democratic Vice Chairman and candidate for Attorney General Teresa Toriseva agreed.

"Vice President Harris has been a steadfast advocate for reproductive rights," Toriseva said. "In light of recent attacks on reproductive freedom, her commitment to safeguarding these rights is crucial.

"We need her leadership to ensure that every woman has the autonomy over her own body and the freedom to make her own health care decisions.”

Olivia Dowler is a first-time candidate for the House of Delegates.

"Donald Trump represents an existential threat to our democracy," she said. "His divisive rhetoric and policies have undermined the very foundation of our nation. Vice President Harris is the leader we need to unite us and steer us towards a brighter future.

"As a new candidate, I am inspired by her vision and dedication."

In a press release, the West Virginia Democratic Party said it believes Harris's nomination is a pivotal step toward addressing the critical issues facing our nation.

"From restoring reproductive freedom to ensuring social justice and defeating the threats posed by divisive leadership, Vice President Harris stands as the beacon of hope and progress," the release states. "We urge West Virginians to join us in supporting Vice President Harris as our next president.

"Together, we can build a more just, equitable, and united America."
