Woman says she fell down apartment stairs without handrail

Slipandfall

HUNTINGTON – A woman has filed suit against the owner of an apartment where she alleges she slipped and fell on stairs that did not have a handrail.

Vickie Wiley alleges she was walking down the steps to exit the building at 601 14th St. W. in Huntington on March 10, 2013, when she slipped and fell.

Due to the fall, Wiley sustained physical and mental pain and suffering, endured a diminished capacity to enjoy her life and suffered embarrassment and humiliation, according to the complaint filed Aug. 26 in Cabell Circuit Court. She also suffered annoyance and inconvenience and incurred medical costs, the suit states.

In her complaint, Wiley blames the apartment's owners, Ronnie R. Meyers and Sonny's, for causing her fall, saying they failed to inspect the premises, failed to provide reasonable maintenance to the premises and failed to warn the public that the stairs were without handrails.

Wiley is seeking an unspecified judgment, plus pre- and post-judgment interest, court costs, attorney fees and other relief the court deems just.

Attorney Kenneth P. Hicks of Huntington will represent her.

Circuit Judge Paul T. Farrell has been assigned to the case.
