Woman blames funeral home for injuries

Slipandfall

BECKLEY – A Raleigh County woman is suing over claims she was injured when she tripped on a ramp outside a funeral home entrance.

Riley and Mabel Lou Williams filed a lawsuit Sept. 24 in Raleigh Circuit Court against Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Inc., S.E. Cemeteries of West Virginia Inc. and Stewart Enterprises Inc.

According to the complaint, Mabel Lou Williams was entering a funeral home on property owned by Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens and operated by Stewart Enterprises, on March 16, 2013, when she tripped on a ramp running perpendicular from the entrance. Williams says she fell and broke her right shoulder, which required medical care and accrued more than $50,000 in medical bills.

The Williamses say Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens may have merged and changed its name to S.E. Cemeteries. The defendants are accused of installing and leaving the ramp in a dangerous condition for visitors. Riley Williams is suing for loss of consortium.

The Williamses seek loss of income, medical costs, legal costs, interest and attorney fees.

They are represented by attorney Thomas K. Fast of Fast Law Office in Fayetteville.
