U.S. Sen. Robert C. Byrd spoke Monday evening during Charleston's Fourth of July celebration at Haddad Riverfront Park on the Kanawha River.
Last week, Byrd included a $1 million provision to an appropriations bill that would allow the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to work on Charleston's riverfront project.
Byrd, who recently became the longest serving senator in history, is running for the seat again this year against Republican John Raese.
