Helton named tax commissioner

CHARLESTON - Gov. Joe Manchin III on Wednesday announced his appointment of Virgil Helton of St. Albans to serve as State Tax Commissioner, a position he's held in an acting role since January 2005.

He previously served as Deputy Director and Chief Financial Officer of the West Virginia Lottery Commission. Prior to his service in state government, he served as a Chief Financial Officer for CDI Engineering Group in St. Albans and Senior Project Manager of AddVantage Performance Group, Inc. in Atlanta.

"Commissioner Helton has a wealth of experience from both the private and public sectors. I am extremely confident that he will continue to do an excellent job in this capacity," Manchin overnor said in a press release.

Helton has been employed by two different international accounting firms, both of which are among the industry's "Big Four." He also has prior experience in the commercial banking industry where he had overall management responsibility for a wide variety of functions, serving in positions ranging from Branch Manager to Chief Operating Officer.

Helton is a Certified Public Accountant and a 1967 graduate of Concord University. He and his wife, Marrie, have two children and two grandchildren.
