PINEVILLE, W.Va. – The West Virginia court system mourned the death of Wyoming County Magistrate Harold H. "Butch" Carte Jr., who died Aug. 19 in Raleigh General Hospital of a short illness. He was 64.
Carte was a native of Itmann, a graduate of Mullens High School and was serving his second term as a magistrate. Carte was a former deputy sheriff, Mullens police chief and a special investigator for the Wyoming County Prosecuting Attorney's Office. He also served two terms on the Mullens City Council and was a former coal miner and a U.S. Army veteran.
Supreme Court Chief Justice Robin Jean Davis said she and her fellow justices were saddened to hear of Carte's death.
"West Virginia has lost a dedicated judicial officer," Davis said. "Our thoughts are with his family."
Wyoming County Circuit Judge John S. Hrko said, "I worked with him for nearly 20 years and always found him to be an energetic, honest individual. Wyoming County has certainly lost a valuable public servant."
"Butch was a great magistrate. He was diligent in his duty and took a lot of pride in his work. He will be sorely missed," said Wilburn W. Bolt, Wyoming County's chief magistrate. Carte is survived by his wife of 36 years, Donna Monday Carte, two sons, three grandchildren, his mother, two sisters and his father-in-law.
