CHARLESTON - West Virginia Supreme Court Justice Larry V. Starcher attended the first annual Judicial Symposium on Civil Justice Issues at Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C.
The purpose of the symposium is to inform the judiciary about competing views and interpretations of pressing civil justice issues. The program includes mini-debates by scholars and lawyers from around the country.
The symposium began at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 6 with a dinner and panel discussion on civil justice developments in the last two years. It continued Thursday with sessions on settlements; admissibility of scientific evidence; interaction of federal regulation, state common law and state statues; controversies involving state and local governments; procedural issues and product liability. Friday sessions included criminalization of commercial activity and its consequences, business and commercial litigation, emerging issues and civil justice reform proposals.
The symposium is sponsored by the Judicial Education Program of the AEI-Brookings Joint Center for Regulatory Studies. The Joint Center is a project of two Washington, D.C. �think tanks,� the American Enterprise Institute and The Brookings Institution.
There are no fees for tuition, reading materials, group meals or lodging and the Joint Center reimburses $250 of travel costs.
