Woman sues Big Sandy after fall at Charleston store

CHARLESTON - A Kanawha County woman has filed a lawsuit against a local furniture company, after she was seriously injured while shopping at the store.

Belinda Barker, of Alum Creek, filed a suit March 8 in Kanawha Circuit Court, naming John Eye Big Sandy Superstore as the defendant.

The suit states that on July 3, 2005, Barker was a customer at the Charleston Big Sandy store. She went to sit in a rocking/glider chair that was on display and was severely injured when the chair fell backward.

As a result of the accident, Barker incurred medical expenses of more than $14,544, to date. The suit says Barker will continue to need more medical help in the future.

The suit says it is the store's duty to make sure all customers are safe.

Barker, through her counsel Charles M. Love, seeks compensatory damages.

The case has been assigned to Judge Jennifer Bailey Walker.
