WVU law school offering CLE workshops

MORGANTOWN - They're taking attorneys to school this fall at West Virginia University's College of Law.

The college's West Virginia Continuing Legal Education group on Friday (Sept. 14) is hosting the seminar, "Federal Criminal Litigation" from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Lugar Courtroom.

Topics from the Adam Walsh Child and Protection Safety Act of 2006 to ethical quandaries facing today's criminal defense lawyer will be explored by nationally known litigators who practice in Massachusetts, Maine, New Jersey and West Virginia.

Organizers are expecting more than 100 Federal Criminal Panel attorneys to come out for the seminar that's being hosted by WVU's law school and the federal Public Defender's Office of West Virginia.

Jessica Justice, the College of Law's assistant dean for continuing education, said Friday's seminar will offer new insights on just what it means to practice law in the 21st century.

The curriculum for the day was developed by Brian Kornbrath, the federal public defender for the Northern District of West Virginia.

"Brian did an amazing job," Justice said. "What he put together will help us address the most important issues facing the defense, including the U.S. Supreme Court's latest decision relating to the guidelines of convicted felons. We're pretty proud of the collaboration."

The seminar is free for federal attorneys, federal law clerks and law students.

Session leaders include Amy Baron-Evans of the National Sentencing Resource Council of Boston; WVU clinical psychologist Dr. William Fremouw; Eric Vos, an assistant federal public defender for the District of Maine; and James Zimarowski, a well-known defense attorney who practices in Morgantown and north-central West Virginia.

* Update on the Law, Oct. 19-20, College of Law

* Solo & Small Firm Conference, Oct. 26- 27, Glade Springs
