Deputy AG discusses hate crimes at WVU law school

MORGANTOWN -– Megan Williams, a 20-year-old black woman from Logan County who police say was brutalized by six white people, was the subject of a hate crime forum Wednesday at the West Virginia University College of Law that featured the state's deputy attorney general.

Paul Sheridan discussed "Hate Crimes, Gender Violence and Community Responses: a Forum in Honor of Megan Williams."

He talked about how the Williams case has affected all West Virginians, no matter the color of their skin. The idea of the forum, organizers say, was to inspire a dialogue to eliminate such violence for good.

The forum was sponsored by student law groups The Coalition to End Race and Gender Violence, Alliance for Social Justice, WVU Law Chapter of West Virginia, Generation Next, Black Students' Law Association and Women's Law Caucus.

WVU's Division of Social Work and its NOVA Institute were co-sponsors.
