PERSONNEL FILE: Potter to take part in Russian ambassador conference

CHARLESTON -- Thomas Potter, a retired Member of Jackson Kelly, PLLC, will participate in the U.S. – Russia Joint Conference on the Rule of Law. The conference is presented jointly by the People to People Ambassador Programs and the Faculty of Law at St. Petersburg State University.

The conference will focus on issues, such as: human rights and the protection of freedoms, intellectual property law, human trafficking of women, terrorism law, women in the law, and the legal risks and opportunities of doing business in the U.S. and Russia.

Potter maintains an of-counsel relationship with the firm. Over the years, Potter has been actively involved in the legal, political, governmental and civic affairs of West Virginia and the Charleston area. He served eight years as an elected member of the West Virginia Legislature and as Chairman of the Republican State Executive Committee.

He is a past president of the West Virginia Bar Association, a member of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers, a Life Fellow and West Virginia Chairman of the American Bar Foundation Fellows, a Fellow of the West Virginia Bar Foundation, a member of the Fourth Circuit Judicial Conference, as well as other professional affiliations.

His community activities have involved many facts of the life of the State and City, including chairmanship of the Charleston Area Chamber of Commerce, Charleston Renaissance Corporation, the Business and Industrial Development Corporation (BIDCO), the National Institute for Chemical Studies, Capital Market Inc., Advantage Valley Inc. and the YMCA. He is a former member of the West Virginia Library Commission, the Board of the University System of West Virginia, the West Virginia University Board of Governors and the Board of the Snowshoe Institute.

Potter currently serves as a member of the Boards of Directors of the West Virginia University Foundation, Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences of West Virginia, Charleston Area Alliance, Charleston Area Medical Center, National Advisory Council of the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center of West Virginia University, West Virginia Senior Sports Classic Inc., the West Virginia Kids Count Fund and the Chemical Alliance Zone.
