CHARLESTON -– The West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals will end its fall 2007 term on Nov. 21 by donating toys to the U.S. Marine Corps' Toys for Tots program.
The donation is part of Chief Justice Robin Jean Davis' "Year of the Child, Too" initiative.
Toys donated by the Supreme Court justices and the Court's employees will be picked up by Marines at noon Wednesday, Nov. 21, during the Court's sine die ceremony.
The Toys for Tots program began in 1947 when it distributed 5,000 toys to children in the Los Angeles area. Since then, it has distributed more than 350 million toys to 166 million children across the country. The Marines and those who help them want to motivate children to grow into responsible, productive, patriotic citizens and community leaders.
That goal meshes with the Court's mission to improve the administration of justice and increase services to citizens. The Toys for Tots program is a way to address the physical needs and wants of West Virginia's youngest citizens.
In the last two years, Davis has focused on improving the way the court system manages cases involving abused and neglected children. The Toys for Tots program helps many of those children as well as children who have had no contact with courts.
This is the second consecutive year the Supreme Court and its employees have participated in the Toys for Tots program.
