Logan Court employees participate in 'Aracoma Story'

LOGAN -– A Logan County Circuit Court law clerk and court reporter and their spouses are participants in this year's production of "The Aracoma Story" outdoor drama at Chief Logan State Park.

Josh Butcher, law clerk to Logan Circuit Judge Roger Perry, plays a warrior. His wife, Jamie Dempsey-Butcher, is the director.

Karen Medley, Judge Perry's court reporter, portrays a Shawnee woman. Her husband, Gary, plays a British scout. Their son, Wesley, plays an Indian boy.

This year's production features two horses that Gary and Karen Medley trained and handle. It's the first time in several years that horses have been used in the show.

During the show, Josh Butcher shoots Gary Medley from his horse and Medley "dies well," Perry said.

"This is worth seeing," Perry said, adding, the show proves "court people do have outside lives."

According to the Chief Logan State Park Web site, "The Aracoma Story blends tales of the Shawnee Indians with the story of young love. Boling Baker, a scout from General Braddock's Army, is captured by the Shawnee who are led by Chief Cornstalk. He is rescued from death by Cornstalk's daughter, Aracoma, and adopted into the tribe that moved to the island in the Guyandotte Valley. The drama tells how Baker and Aracoma's people were weakened by disease and how a raid, lead by Baker to steal horses, ended in the destruction of this adoptive tribe."

The show ran June 17-21 and June 24-28 and will continue July 1-5. All performances are at 8:30 p.m. at the outdoor amphitheater at Chief Logan State Park. For ticket information call 752-0253 or visit http://www.thearacomastory.com.
