CHARLESTON – Spilman Thomas & Battle recently announced that Alex Macia has returned as a member of the firm and will be based in the Charleston office.

"Alex is an outstanding professional and we look forward to having him again at the firm," Mike Basile, managing member of Spilman Thomas & Battle, said.

Macia most recently served as vice president for legal affairs at West Virginia University. He also served as general counsel at WVU for several months.

While at WVU, Macia was instrumental in the lawsuit against former football coach Rich Rodriguez that led to a settlement for Rodriguez to pay the entire $4 million damages for breaking a contract he signed with WVU last August. Macia was also involved helping to get a record increase in state funding for WVU and its faculty and passage of the Bucks for Brains program.

"It was a privilege to serve my alma mater, and I look forward to once again practicing law with my colleagues at Spilman," Macia said. "I am eager to resume my former practice of litigation and governmental relations."

Macia worked at Spilman Thomas & Battle before going to work for WVU in 2007. Previously, he served as general counsel and then chief of staff to former Gov. Bob Wise.

Spilman Thomas & Battle is a full-service law firm with more than 100 attorneys. Founded in 1864, Spilman has offices in Charleston, Morgantown and Wheeling in West Virginia; Pittsburgh, Pa.; Winston-Salem, N.C.; and Roanoke, Va.
