Canfield

CHARLESTON -- John Canfield, former corporate counsel with State Farm Insurance Companies in Charleston for the past 16 years, has joined Dinsmore & Shohl.

He will join the firm as a partner in the Government Relations, Health Care, and Insurance Practice Groups, working in the firm's Charleston office.

"We are obviously pleased to have someone of John's experience and talents join us," said Henry Jernigan, managing partner of Dinsmore & Shohl's West Virginia offices. "His addition is a reflection of the continued commitment Dinsmore has to its clients in West Virginia and beyond, a commitment that has seen the firm grow from two lawyers in the state in January of 2002 to a total of 45 today.

"Couple that with the resources available though our offices in Kentucky, Ohio and Pennsylvania and the over 375 in those locations, and we are uniquely situated to serve the diverse needs of our clients."

Canfield focuses his practice on government relations, insurance and health care law. He has extensive experience with insurance coverage disputes and extra-contractual bad faith issues. He brings extensive legislative and regulatory experience to the firm. Canfield is currently a member of the Board of Directors for the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce and also serves as Vice-Chairman of its Government Relations Committee.

Canfield has served five terms as the President of the West Virginia Insurance Federation, the state trade association for property and casualty insurers, where he played a key role in the passage of the state's comprehensive insurance and civil justice reform legislation. He is a former Board member of the West Virginia Insurance Guaranty Association and the West Virginia Life & Health Insurance Guaranty Association.

Canfield earned his B.A. in History from West Virginia University and his J.D. from the West Virginia University College of Law, where he served on the Moot Court Board and earned the Order of the Barristers award.

Dinsmore & Shohl LLP is marking its 100th anniversary in 2008, celebrating a legacy of client service forged by founding partners Frank Dinsmore and Judge Walter Shohl. The firm is one of the largest full-service law firms in the Midwest and provides a broad range of integrated services to meet the needs of both large and small businesses, as well as institutions, associations, governments, professional firms and individuals.
