State Law Library to host Grandparents Rights workshop

CHARLESTON -- In recognition of the thirtieth anniversary of Grandparents Day, the State Law Library will present a free workshop titled "Grandparents' Rights" at 11 a.m. Saturday.

The session will focus on grandparents' legal rights to visitation and interaction with their grandchildren.

The workshop will be held in the State Law Library, Building 1, Room E-404 in the East Wing of the state Capitol. It is open to the public and no registration is required.

Metered parking is available on California Avenue and behind the Cultural Center near the parking garage. For more information, contact Sara Thompson at the State Law Library at (304) 558-2607.

The impetus for a National Grandparents Day began with Marian McQuade, now age 91, a housewife in Fayette County, according to the National Grandparents Council. Her goal was to champion the cause of lonely elderly in nursing homes. She also hoped to persuade grandchildren to tap the wisdom and heritage of their grandparents.

In 1978, then-President Jimmy Carter proclaimed that National Grandparents Day would be celebrated every year on the first Sunday after Labor Day, which this year is Sept. 7.
