CHARLESTON -- Kay Casto & Chaney has announced that Shannon P. Smith and Erin K. Jones have been hired as associates.
Jones, a native of Charleston, has joined the Charleston office. Her practice areas include, Employment and Labor Law and Insurance / Litigation.
Jones is admitted to practice in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia, as well as the Supreme Court of Appeals for West Virginia. She is a member of the Defense Trial Council of West Virginia and the Kanawha County Bar Association.
In 2004, she graduated summa cum laude from West Virginia University with a bachelor's degree in journalism. She received the Kappa Tau Alpha "Top Scholar Award" in journalism and the "Top Scholar Award" in public relations.
In 2008, Jones received her J.D. from West Virginia University's College of Law. While in law school, she was member of the Moot Court Board, national team member; Moot Court Baker Cup, best oralist; and recently inducted into the Order of the Coif and Order of the Barristers.
Smith has joined the Morgantown office and her practice areas include Energy / Natural Resources and Real Estate Law.
Prior to joining Kay Casto & Chaney, Smith was an associate at Waters, Warner & Harris in Clarksburg. In 2002, she received her bachelor's degree in Accounting from West Virginia University. In 2006, she received her J.D. degree from the WVU College of Law, earning the Order of the Barristers.
While at the College of Law, Smith was runner-up in the George C. Baker Cup Competition, was a member of the National Moot Court Team, served as Associate Chief Justice of the Moot Court Board, was active in Lugar Trial Association, served as an officer of Public Interest Advocates, and founded the Alternative Dispute Resolution Society.
Smith is a member of the American Bar Association, the West Virginia State Bar, the Harrison County Bar Association, and the Association for Conflict Resolution. She currently serves as the Chair of the Magistrate Court Mediation Subcommittee of the West Virginia State Bar's ADR Committee. Smith is also an adjunct lecturer of Appellate Advocacy at West Virginia University College of Law.
Smith is admitted to practice in the U.S. District Courts for both the Northern and Southern Districts of West Virginia, as well as the Supreme Court of Appeals for West Virginia.
In 2007, she served on the Relay for Life for Harrison County Committee for the American Cancer Society, and currently serves as a mentor for the Monongalia County Teen Court.
