CHARLESTON – Retiring Supreme Court Justice Larry Starcher has been named a Distinguished West Virginian by Gov. Joe Manchin.
The Distinguished West Virginian award was created to honor those who have contributed significantly to West Virginia or West Virginians and have brought positive attention to our state. Manchin gave the award Tuesday to Starcher during a reception in celebration of Starcher's retirement. The event was hosted by Legal Aid of West Virginia.
Starcher is retiring after a 12-year term on the state Supreme Court of Appeals. He previously served as a Circuit Judge in Monongalia County from 1977 to 1996, which is when he joined the Supreme Court.
Starcher opened the North Central West Virginia Legal Aid Society office in Morgantown in October 1969 and served as its director until February 1976.
The award says Starcher was named a Distinguished West Virginian "For outstanding achievement and meritorious service. The State of West Virginia hereby recognizes your exceptional accomplishment and confers this commendation in your name."
