CHARLESTON -- Jonathan Deem is ready to face new challenges in his upcoming promotion as general counsel for Gov. Joe Manchin.
"It's a great feeling coming to work every day knowing you will be challenged intellectually and physically," Deem said.
Deem, who was serving as deputy general counsel, replaced Carte Goodwin, who recently left the post.
Deem's duties aren't changing much -– he will continue to draft legislation, work on drafting executive orders and will still work with legislators.
However, he will be able to work more closely with Manchin.
"I'm looking forward to working with the governor," he said. "He's a great boss."
Perhaps what Deem will miss most about his new position is his ability to work with Goodwin.
"I look forward to taking on this new job in this new role, but I'm going to miss working with Carte," he said. "He's been a great mentor. I am deeply indebted to the help he's given me in developing my abilities as a lawyer and government employee."
Deem graduated from West Virginia University College of Law in May 2006.
During grad school, Deem worked part-time as a law clerk for Jackson Kelly in Morgantown.
He continued to work there as an associate for 18 months after his graduation until his movee to serve as deputy general counsel in October 2007.
Deem received his bachelor's degree from WVU in 2001 in journalism.
From there, he worked in former Gov. Bob Wise's office as governor's advance and helped to manage his public appearance schedule.
Deem, who grew up in Pleasants County, graduated from Wheeling Park High School in 1997.
