Milenkovski

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Steptoe & Johnson attorney Kathy Milenkovski provided the keynote luncheon address on The American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 during the 32nd Annual Platt's Coal Marketing Days held in Pittsburgh, Pa.

The conference, held in early October, was designed to discuss the prices, politics and economic outlook for the coal industry, with a special emphasis on the Waxman-Markey Energy, Climate, and Cap & Trade Bill.

Milenkovski, an attorney in the firm's Columbus, Ohio, office, described the historic and political significance of the bill, which was the first piece of climate-change legislation to clear one of the houses of Congress. She went on to provide insiders with an overview of the bill, which includes new standards for energy efficiency and promotes clean energy technologies, while providing a detailed look at cap and trade. Lastly, she covered the likelihood of the bill's passage in the Senate and the impact it may have on the natural resource industry.

"The proposed legislation, if enacted, would surely lead to increased electricity costs, job losses in the traditional energy sectors, and lasting, negative impacts on the U.S. economy," explained Milenkovski. "As long as growing third-world countries like China and India are not subject to similar regulation, U.S. businesses will be at a competitive disadvantage, yet any greenhouse gas reductions resulting from U.S. legislation will likely have little or no impact on global climate change."

Milenkovski's legal practice at Steptoe & Johnson focuses on the areas of air quality and environmental law. She is included in Chambers USA America's Leading Lawyers for Business, The Best Lawyers in America, Super Lawyers and LawDragon 500.

Milenkovski was honored with the Columbus Bar Association Community Service Award, the Ohio State Bar Foundation Community Service Award, and she was named the Columbus Jaycees' Outstanding Young Citizen. Milenkovski currently serves as co-chair of the Environmental Litigation Committee of the American Bar Association's Section of Litigation. She earned her bachelor's degree from the Ohio State University, and her law degree from Capital University.
