PERSONNEL FILE: Steptoe & Johnson elects Flanery to executive committee

CLARKSBURG -– Steptoe & Johnson CEO Susan S. Brewer has announced that Sharon O. Flanery has been elected to the firm's executive committee, a leadership position that spans a three-year term.

Within the practice of law, Flanery oversees the firm's Energy Team, and concentrates in matters affecting oil and gas, coal, coalbed methane, natural gas pipelines and storage, hydro and biomass. As a petroleum engineer with both an operating and legal background in the energy and natural resources industry, Flanery brings valuable real world experience to her practice.

Flanery sits on the Board of Directors of the North American Coalbed Methane Forum and has co-authored several papers including "Recent Legal Developments in Carbon Sequestration," 2008 Society of Petroleum Engineers Eastern Regional/American Association of Petroleum Geologists Eastern Section Joint Meeting and "The Balancing of Coal and Coalbed Methane Interests Within the Coalbed Methane Statutory Schemes of Virginia, West Virginia and Kentucky," Journal of Natural Resources & Environmental Law, University of Kentucky College of Law, 2004-2005.

Prior to joining Steptoe & Johnson, Flanery served as the Vice President for Exploration at Columbia Natural Resources, and before that as Assistant General Counsel for Columbia Gas Transmission Corp./Nisource Corporate Services Company.

Flanery's experience is highlighted in The Best Lawyers in America®, Chambers USA America's Leading Lawyers for Business (Band One Leading Lawyer, Natural Resources), and Super Lawyers® publications. She was recognized as "Outstanding Alumni of the Year" by the WVU Minerals & Energy Resources Department, has served as a guest speaker in the Distinguished Lecture Series produced by the WVU College of Engineering and Mineral Resources, and is on the Advisory Board for the Department of Petroleum Engineering.

Flanery is resident in the Charleston office of Steptoe & Johnson.
