BOSTON - Since the November 2009 creation of the federal Financial Fraud Enforcement Task Force, more than 1,215 criminal defendants have faced mortgage fraud charges, and more are expected. As a result, Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough's Juliane Balliro has launched an informative blog on mortgage fraud and other white collar crime subjects entitled "Loan Broker Criminal Defense" (www.loanbrokercriminaldefense.com).

Balliro is a partner in the law firm's Boston office and has been trying cases in the areas of white-collar criminal defense and employment law for more than 25 years. She represents companies, executives, and individuals in complex business, employment, and criminal cases. Balliro has tried in excess of 100 cases in various state and federal courts and has authored and argued dozens of appeals.

Balliro represents criminal defendants charged with a wide range of white-collar crimes such as bank fraud, wire fraud, tax evasion, Medicare and Medicaid fraud, false claims, Internet pharmacy violations, and bid rigging. She has represented individuals and companies from the banking, healthcare, business, public, and private sectors. She recently obtained exoneration and more than $100 million in damages from the government for several men unjustly accused of murder by the FBI.

"Mortgage fraud has become the new crime 'du jour' for the U.S. Justice Department, and the FBI has more than 3,000 pending mortgage fraud cases," Balliro said. "Mortgage brokers and consumer assistance entities are the low-hanging fruit for the FBI and state prosecutors in the mortgage fraud arena. These investigations can take months, or even years, to reach an end result."

Balliro is a frequent lecturer on labor and employment, criminal defense, and civil rights topics and has been a contributing author to a wide variety of legal publications on criminal defense topics.

She is admitted to practice in Massachusetts, the Supreme Court of the United States, the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. She earned her Juris Doctor in 1981 from Boston College School of Law and earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1978 from Boston College.

She can be reached in Boston at 617.573.4713; 617.573.4713 or by e-mail: juliane.balliro@nelsonmullins.com.
