Prominent legal scholar to headline Fairness WV Conference at WVU

MORGANTOWN -- Ruthann Robson, John T. Copenhaver visiting Chair at the West Virginia University College of Law, will be the featured speaker at the Fairness WV Conference 2010.

The event is Saturday, Oct. 16, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at WVU's National Research Center for Coal and Energy Building, room 101A-B.

Robson, professor of law and University Distinguished Professor at the City University of New York School of Law, will give the keynote address, "Faith in Justice: Considering Proposition 8, DOMA, and Don't Ask, Don't Tell," which explores constitutional and legal aspects of Lesbian, Gay Bisexual and Transgender social equity. Robson is the author of "Sappho Goes to Law School" and other books and articles on sexuality and law.

The theme of the conference is "Keeping the Faith." It is organized by Fairness West Virginia, the leading statewide non-partisan, non-profit LGBT advocacy organization. The WVU President's Office for Social Justice and WVU Council on Sexual Orientation are hosting and co-sponsoring the event with Fairness WV.

The conference is open to the public and is recommended for anyone who wants learn and get more involved.

Conference co-sponsors also include the WVU Carruth Center for Psychological and Psychiatric Services, WVU Common Ground, BiGLTM, WV Rainbow Pride, Caritas House, Covenant House, WVU Outlaw, Rainbow Law and MPowerment.

Activities include:

* Fairness in Faith roundtable discussion among notable religious leaders

* Screening and discussion of the film documentary "Out in the Silence"

* Special interest group breakout sessions on:

* Fairness in Faith - LGBT spirituality and networking

* Fairness in Action - LGBT legal, human rights, community action, politics

* Fairness in Health - LGBT Wellness Forum - Current LGBT programs in practice

* Networking luncheon
