PERSONNEL FILE: Segal appointed secretary of University of Vermont Foundation board

BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Attorney Scott S. Segal of Charleston, W.Va., has been appointed secretary of the Board of Directors of the University of Vermont Foundation.

Segal, a 1977 graduate of the University of Vermont, was named to the Board of Directors of the charitable foundation upon its formation in spring of 2011. The purpose of the foundation is to secure and manage private support for the benefit of the university.

"We are fortunate that Scott Segal has agreed to take on this vital role with the UVM Foundation at its inception," said Eugene Kalkin, chairman of the UVM Foundation board. "His background in the law, his experience with foundations, and his personal philanthropy are going to be important assets in our work on behalf of UVM."

A prominent Charleston trial attorney, Segal was inducted into the Inner Circle of Advocates, which has a limited membership of 100 of the top plaintiffs' trial lawyers in the United States. He is also associated with the American College of Trial Lawyers, the American Association of Justice –- Leader's Forum, the American Board of Trial Advocates, the West Virginia Association for Justice -– Board of Governors and the Fourth Circuit Judicial Conference. He also teaches continuing legal education seminars nationally.

Segal earned his Bachelor of Science from the University of Vermont in 1977 and his Juris Doctor from West Virginia University College of Law in 1981. He is married to West Virginia Supreme Court Justice Robin Jean Davis. The couple also head the Segal & Davis Family Foundation, which provides charitable support primarily to educational institutions, as well as to charities for children and animals. Among its recent awards was funding for the Robert B. Lawson Green & Gold Professorship in Psychology at the University of Vermont.
