Couple sues Logan County landlords, alleging negligence in fall on stairs

Stairs

LOGAN -- A couple is suing the owners of a Logan County rental unit after the husband allegedly fell down stairs and shattered a glass door.

Ed and Shelly Chaffin filed a lawsuit Aug. 10 in Logan Circuit Court against Tier Two Inc., Gary Corns, Wendy Corns, and an unnamed defendant, alleging negligence.

According to the complaint, on Aug. 15, 2013, Ed Chaffin fell down steps, shattering a glass door owned by the defendants. Chaffin sustained injuries to his wrist, knee, neck, back and head, as well as pain and suffering, and medical expenses, the suit says.

The lawsuit says the defendants failed to properly maintain the stairs, make the stairs safe for foot traffic, warn about a hazardous condition and light the stairs. Ed Chaffin alleges negligence and carelessness, and his wife, Shelly, alleges loss of consortium.

The Chaffins seek unspecified compensatory and punitive damages, as well as court costs and attorney fees. They are represented by attorney Erica N. Lord of The Law Offices of Erica Lord in Charleston.

Logan Circuit Court case number 15-C-218.
