Estate claims negligence led to death of 81-year-old woman

Medical malpractice 04

PRINCETON – An estate's executor is suing over allegations that a wrongful death was caused by the negligence of several parties.

Amy Vaulton, as executor of the estate of Lois W. Perkins, filed the suit May 25 in Mercer Circuit Court against Dr. Stephen H. Blaydes; Blaydes Eye Associates Inc., doing business as Blaydes Clinic Hospital; Bluefield Hospital Company LLC, doing business as Bluefield Regional Medical Center; Dr. Sandeep Vardan; and Cardiomed PLLC.

Perkins died on March 26, 2014, at age 81, as the result of alleged negligence in determining her fitness for surgery. the suit says. According to the complaint, she had consulted with Blaydes about cataract surgery and he recommended that Perkins make an appointment with Vardan, her primary care provider, to set up a stress test to determine her fitness for surgery. That test took place March 6, 2014, the suit claims.

According to the complaint, the test indicated risk factors such as Perkins' age, hypertension, diabetes, myocardial infarction, cardiac catheter and past bypass surgery, but she was cleared for the surgery.

Perkins died, the suit alleges, because her body couldn't withstand the surgery.

Because of the defendants' alleged negligence, Vaulton seeks punitive and direct damages, expenses for funeral and cremation, attorney fees, interest, and other damages as determined by a jury. She is represented by Kevin P. Davis in Charleston.
