Inmate blames federal prison operators for injuries

BECKLEY — An prison inmate is suing federal prison operators and agents, alleging negligence caused her to suffer injuries.

Carolyn Grant filed a complaint Sept. 28 in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia Beckley Division against the U.S. Department of Justice, the Federal Bureau of Prisons, and bureau agents Barbara Rickard and Don Paddgett, alleging they failed to maintain a prison facility in a reasonably safe condition.

According to the complaint, Grant an inmate at the defendants' Alderson Federal Prison Camp. She alleges on March 13, 2015, while she walking on the sidewalk at the prison, she tripped and fell on a broken sidewalk causing her to hit her head on the concrete. 

The suit says Grant sustained a severe injury to her head that required multiple surgeries. Grant says she also will continue to suffer neurological problems. Grant says her medical bills reached $264,089.21 as of February. 

The plaintiff alleges the defendants failed to take precautions to fix the known unsafe condition at the facility and failed to provide timely and adequate medical care and treatment to the plaintiff.

Grant seeks trial by jury, all damages, plus interest, court costs and expenses, and all further relief the court deems just and proper. She is represented by attorney Joshua R. Martin of West Law Firm LC in So. Charleston.
