WHEELING – An Ohio County mother alleges her son was injured during delivery at Wheeling Hospital.
Alysa Astana, individually and as mother and next friend of Gede Astana, a minor filed a complaint Oct. 18 in Ohio Circuit Court against Sarah Lancione MD alleging a breach of duty in the standard of care.
According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that she presented to Wheeling Hospital on the morning of Aug. 22, 2015, in labor. The suit states her son, Gede Astana, was delivered via C-section around 2 a.m. Aug. 23, 2015.
The suit states that during labor, Gede Astana's fetal heart rate showed head compressions and heart tracings "showed minimal or absent variability with late decelerations." The suit states after birth, he was transferred to another hospital and diagnosed with a severe hypoxic-ischemic brain injury.
The plaintiff holds Lancione responsible because the defendant allegedly failed to closely evaluate plaintiff and her son's condition upon signs of fetal distress and failed to timely deliver Gede Astana much sooner than what actually occurred.
The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks compensatory damages, attorney's fees, costs and expenses and any further relief that the court may deem proper. She is represented by Geoffrey C. Brown of Bordas & Bordas PLLC in Wheeling. The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge Jason A. Cuomo.
