BECKLEY — An Ohio medical student is suing a Curacao medical school and a Raleigh County hospital, alleging sexual harassment.

Andrea Whitley filed a complaint March 21 in Raleigh Circuit Court against Avalon University School of Medicine, Raleigh General Hospital and Sylvanus Oyogoa, alleging violation of the West Virginia Human Rights Act.

According to the complaint, as a result of the defendants' conduct, Whitley was forced to leave medical school and has been unable to obtain employment as a medical doctor. She says she has suffered lost wages and benefits, indignity, embarrassment, emotional distress and annoyance.

The plaintiff alleges Oyogoa continuously harassed her in a verbal and threatening manner and that Avalon failed to take corrective actions to address or stop Oyogoa's inappropriate behavior.

Whitley seeks trial by jury, compensatory damages, plus interest, attorney fees, court costs and all further relief the court deems just and equitable. She is represented by attorneys Mark A. Atkinson and John-Mark Atkinson of Atkinson & Polak PLLC in Charleston, and by Russell A. Williams of Katz, Kantor, Stonestreet & Buckner PLLC in Charleston.
